Ajith who went off the radar in his last 'Aegan', is back fit and fine in 'Asal'. And perhaps to compensate the 'Aegan' disappointment, he hogs all the limelight giving audience a double delight in the movie.

Though the story is not new, it is all about style and substance and the film is loaded with rich visuals and breathtaking sequences, making it a quality outing.

When a hit pair comes together, the expectations always bound to be high. So when Ajith and director Saran, who have back to back successes under their belt ('Kadhal Mannan', 'Amarkkalam' and 'Attagasam') joined hands for 'Asal', there was an air of expectancy.

'Asal' not just rises up to that level, but also good in its own way especially because Ajith is energetic and Saran efficient. Their good vibes are evident on screen.

Sivaji Productions deserves all credit, for at a time when the film industry is facing some troubled times, a production house going all guns without anything in mind but to come out with a quality product, deserves applause.

Supernatural-fantasy seems to be an unusual genre when it comes to Tamil film industry as not may auteurs want to challenge themselves with such peculiar sort. Rama Narayanan has always been a master of experiments as his films have been successful even without the casting of superstars and main league technicians. After a long sabbatical gap, the filmmaker is back with a tale that in no way is innovative, but caters for the tastes of ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres.

The film centers on happy living couple (‘Dillu Durai’ Ramji and Sangeetha) along with their daughter (Baby Keerthika). It’s a picture perfect life for the entire family until the couple starts witnessing nightmarish experience with the kid’s phenomenal behavior. Late in time, they’re exposed to a shocking truth that the girl is possessed by a ghost of Sangetha’s close friend (Kaveri). Shockingly, a car taking its possession as a robot, which is nothing but the ghost of Kaveri’s brother (Ganja Karuppu) starts terrorizing the town.

Sura is a good hearted young man in a Fishery Village called Yaazh Nagar (Yaazh is the name of Srilankan city Jaffna!?). He does good things to the villagers. In the mean time, Dev Gil, a local minister try to vacate the village and occupy the entire land. Knowing this Vijay starts his fight with him. At a stage, Minister plans to destroy Vijay. How Vijay escapes from the plot and save the people and join with Tamanna is the predictable, boring climax!

When it’s a Mani Ratnam film you don’t have to tell in particular about the visuals or the music or the costumes or the ‘thats’ and the ‘thises’. Then again, you just cannot stop thinking about the visuals the film had to offer. They were such a treat that watching the film in mute shouldn’t be a bother. But, what’s new in this film is the touch of the abstract. Whenever Veera is thinking of something, a series of quick cuts from various angles and moods are shown. This is a brilliant reference to the ten headed thought process of Raavana (bak bak baka bak). And also the simplicity and yet a complex aura the screenplay creates.
