When the human son of a werewolf is born in a cell, the evil leader of the clan of vampires, Viktor, spares his life and names him Lucian. He then forces him to transform other humans into the new breed - Lycan, and raises him as a slave wearing a leash to control his ability. Along the years, Lucian becomes a brave warrior with a great leadership over the other Lycans. He protects the aristocratic vampires during the daylight against the vicious and infectious breed of werewolves that are unable to take human form ever again. However, Viktor's daughter, Sonja, and Lucian are lovers and they secretly meet each other every now and then. Lucian unleashes and transforms in a werewolf to save the life of Sonja in a battle against the werewolves. However, Viktor sentences him to be brutally whipped thirty times and then imprisons him in the dungeon. Sonja saves Lucian and he escapes with other prisoners to the woods. When Viktor discovers that Sonja is pregnant and in love with Lucian, he locks her up in her room to force Lucian to return to the castle to rescue her, in the beginning of the feud between the two bloodlines.

The acting is superb, particularly OK-vin Kim, the gorgeous actress in the female lead role who, at 22, shows a range that is remarkable. The character borders on a kind of black widow film noir type. She careens from innocent to impish to vixen to demon with utter conviction. This is a really smooth and nervy performance.

The film begins in year 2009, when there is a huge explosion on the surface of the sun. We then see Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an American scientist, traveling to a copper mine in India to meet his friend, who discovered that Earth's temperature is increasing rapidly. He returns to Washington D.C. and submits a report to his supervisor, who immediately takes him to the president. In 2010, we see the President of the United States tell other heads of state the situation (the world is ending) and we also see billionaires all over the world buying plane tickets for untold sums of money. In 2011 the original of The Mona Lisa in the Louvre is replaced with a decoy, and is sealed away for unknown reasons.

The story jumps ahead to 2012. Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), a divorced father who works as a limousine driver and writer, and his ex-wife, Kate Curtis (Amanda Peet), and children, Noah (Liam James) and Lily (Morgan Lily), who live with Kate's new boyfriend, Gordon (Thomas McCarthy). Jackson takes his children on a camping trip to Yellowstone, where he meets Charlie Frost, who hosts a radio segment that addresses the Mayans' prediction. Charlie mentions a map of where special ships are, but Jackson assumes he is a rambling drunk and leaves him. Kate and Gordon and in a super market buying groceries when the floor begins to crack and the supermarket is split in half. Jackson gets a call that he has to return from camping with the kids. Jackson arrives at the house and drops the kids off, and takes his limo to a job. He goes to the house of Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov. Jackson takes yuri, his children and his girlfriend to the airport. The children make cruel comments to Jackson, and as they board the plane, they mention they have tickets to board the ships and Jackson doesnt. This leads Jackson to believe Charlies story, and he rents a plane. Jackson hurrys to Kates house and picks up her, the kids, and Gordon as the house collapses and a massive earthquake begins. They drive through L.A while it is being destroyed and arrive just in time at the airport. Gordon flys the plane out of L.A, and from the sky, we see L.A being sunken into the pacific ocean. Jackson announces they have to get to Yellow stone to get the map from Charlie. They fly there and Jackson goes looking for Charlie. He finds his R.V and takes it out looking for Charlie, he finds him at the top of a hill waiting for the impact. Charlie tells Jackson where the map is and he rushes back to the R.V as a massive explosion goes off, hurtling rocks in every direction. Jackson gets to the plane and they take off for china.

Minnale hews to the staid Indian movie tradition of offering a love story with a few twists and hoping the audience will not get that deja vu feeling.

Within the framework of the love story, there is usually little scope for doing something novel since unimaginative Indian directors have beaten love to death over the last seven decades. But within this circumscribed framework director Goutham seems to make a valiant attempt with a slightly offbeat, if implausible, story.

Minnale also packs a fine performance by youngster Madhavan.

Rajesh (Madhavan), a young engineer and indifferent to women in his college days, is smitten with Reena (Reema) the first time he sees her amidst heavy rain and flashes of lightening.

To his great dismay, he soon learns that the object of his affection is to soon get married to Rajeev, an Indian engineer working in Seattle. But he also discovers that Reena has yet to meet Rajeev and only talked to him over the phone.

Seeing no alternative, prodded by his grandfather Suppini (played by that delightful old comedian Nagesh) and with little time left, Rajesh decides to impersonate as Rajeev to gain Reema's affections. Over a period of five days, Rajesh so inveigles himself into Reena's heart that she even asks him when he would marry her.

But Rajesh's game is up when the real Rajeev returns to India. It turns out that Rajeev is none other than Rajesh's old college bete noire Sam. Reena is also incensed with Rajesh's duplicitous behavior and wants to have nothing to do with him. Preparations for Reema's marriage to Rajeev Samuel move at a quick pace.

Reema is all right but her performance doesn't rise above the ordinary.

Besides Madhavan's solid performance, what salvages Minnale from the mediocre dustheap is fine music from Harris Jeyaraj. Memories of the songs, particularly linger long after the movie ends. Our favorites were Azhagiya Theeye, Venmathiye Venmathiye Nillu and Verenna Vendum.

Seldom are Tamil film fans treated to a fast paced, slick movie like Kaakha Kaakha.

Directed by Gautham of Minnale fame, Kaakha Kaakha is that rare amalgam of love, action, tragedy, scintillating music and superb photography. Fine performances by the lead characters, a tight script and crisp dialogs add to the charm of this movie.

The movie centers around a dedicated police officer and "encounter" specialist Anbuselvan (Suriya) and his lady love, a math teacher Maya (Jothika).

Anbuselvan arouses the wrath of hardcore criminal Pandiya (Jeevan) when he guns down the hoodlum's brother Sethu. An enraged Pandiya swears revenge on the cops responsible. He warns Anbu that he would kidnap his girlfriend Maya and make him suffer.

Keeping his promise of wreaking destruction on the policemen, Pandiya's brutal attack comes soon after Anbu's wedding. Pandiya and his henchmen shoot Anbu and throw him into a lake. Believing Anbu to be dead, the gangsters cart away Maya to their lair and plan to sell her to a brothel.

But the badly injured Anbu manages to elude death and goes after Pandiya in an effort to rescue Maya.

The final fight scene between Anbu and Pandiya on a narrow bridge leading into rough seas has been beautifully shot in silhouette.

Every song in Kaakha Kaakha is a treat to the ears.

Our favorites were Uyirin uyire, Ondra irenda aasaigal and Ennai Konjum matri. Shot on a private beach in the Andamans, Uyirin uyire has been picturized beautifully and is just awesome. It's been a while since we derived so much pleasure watching and listening to a Tamil film song.

Suriya, Jothika and Jeevan are very effective in their respective roles. No crude overacting here.

This movie touches upon that unique Indian invention to get rid of alleged criminals without due process of law - the so-called encounters in which the police gun down alleged bad elements in cold blood and make it appear as if they were killed in self-defense. -
